debates and recovered. it's recoverable because there are more debates. but this was bad. and his own supporters -- i went to a denver rally. to a person they were like, what was that? what was this guy? and they were your supporters, robert. >> but, look, let's dispense with style. i don't doubt that style is important. but let's understand exactly -- i want to drill down on that. >> the president who loved style dispensing with style. >> this president is serious about substance and is wondering whether it is that mitt romney went with his substance. i had a white board last night. i should have brought it. there is a $4. trillion in revenue. you cut according to mitt romney's own plan there's a 20% rate reduction from the bush tax cuts. we'll end the estate tax. we're going to cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25%. you cannot sit here, mr. speaker, or anybody can't sit here and say, that doesn't require a reduction in the amount of revenue by 4.8 trillion. this is math. >> i'll say it right now. >>

that's where he made his mistakes during the primary debates. and obama has a tendency to ramble. and i think that's going to be interesting to watch. >> listen, i think the reality is that when the challenger gets the opportunity to stand on the same stage, feet from the president of the united states, and go toe-to-toe, and offer without any media fundamentalad press densz densy, i think it will make a difference. >> romney had a conversation with "good morning america" about that. let me play a portion and have you respond to it in particular. >> i think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate. but i think that the challenge that i'll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall i say it, say things that aren't true. and in attacking his opponents. >> give me an example of what he would want to attack, what the president has done, and how you think romney will handle it. >> well, i think president obama has, and i want to be charitable here, has a casual relationship with the truth. he's very eloquent. he's extremely articulate. he is very bright.

what would you be telling barack obama if you were vising him about these upcoming debates? >> i would tell him first he has to understand that romney can win this debate if he's scripted, prepared, has really worked at it. if you watched him on "60 minutes" last sunday, he was smooth, he was clear, he was succinct. he was different than he has been. he has to be careful not to be spontaneous because when he is, he gets himself in trouble. i think they are on a search for zingers and one-liners because romney was cover-upped by kennedy. they have to be careful because the president could have a comeback. i think what you do in the debate preps you try to game out what the other side is going to say and then you try to see how you can respond. it's always strongest when it's a comeback. zenners don't work as a cute line. they work as part of the fabric of argument. in 1980, they knew jimmy carter was going to look at ronald reagan and say, "you were against medicare" at the beginning, happened to be true. but reagan looked at him, shook his head and said, "there you go again.
